Wrought Iron Gates
Much confusion surrounds the term “wrought iron” and as a Blacksmith I feel that I should clarify the term. Up to ,say, 1920s the term “wrought iron” refered to the material ( made up to the end of the 18 century by direct reduction using charcoal[“charcoal iron] and up until the 1950s using the puddling process [“puddled iron”]) however the public perception of the term is of a style ( generally of the traditional scrolly style) we now refer to the material as “real wrought iron”.This material is still available as reprocessed recovered puddled iron and some charcoal iron, generally used in conservation work, see Chris Topp the supplier.
